This is a charitable event in aid of Great Ormond Street Hospital & The Evalina Children's Wing at St Thomas's Hospital

Mountain Troop Adventures is organising the Welsh 3 peaks charity challenge in aid of Great Ormond Street Hospital & the Evelina Children's Wing at St Thomas's Hospital. The challenge is to climb the three highest peaks in Wales. Mt Snowdon 1,085 m, Cadair Idris 893 m & Pen y Fan 886 m. This will be a team event at £500 per team.

Description

The Story:

In October 2020, our grandson became seriously ill due to a viral infection on the heart. The infection lead to our little fella having a stroke at 17 months, leading to other serious complications. The team at Great Ormond Street Hospital, through their skill & dedication, pulled off an incredible series of complicated operations in saving our grandson. There followed a lengthy time of physiotherapy, and a long spell of rehabilitation after being transferred to the team at the Evelina Children's Wing at St Thomas's Hospital. To say this was one of the worst moments of our life as a family, is an understatement. In recognition of their work, dedication & care for the patients and families at both hospitals, my son has asked me to organise this worthwhile event as a thank you to those teams.

Event Schedule:

SNOWDON: Arrive Pen y Pass car park (LL55 4NY) Friday 7th May for 22:00  start. Car parking can be limited, so expect to park further down the lanes.

CADAIR IDRIS: Arrive 02:30/03:00 at car park (LL36 9AJ) we should be looking for an up-down time of 4 hours.

PEN Y FAN: Starting this final ascent for 08:00. The car park & start location is opposite the storey arms activity centre. The car park has plenty of spaces which are free. There are over spill spaces a few hundred meters from the main car park.

* Remember, you are trying to complete this challenge in the best possible time, so from the moment you arrive at the start, you will continue walking through the night until the finish the following day. There will be trophies for the fastest team overall, and the funniest dressed team. Medals & event T-shirts will be issued for all that take part. There's also the chance to win a £100 gift voucher for one of the outdoor stores. 

Mountain Registration:

Event registration/booking-in will take place at the first Mountain (Snowdon) so it will be wise that you attend early. You will be given your team safety briefing, team event number & your personal survival goodie bag. You will receive your other Mountain bags when you arrive at the following start lines! Your progress will be checked and monitored throughout the whole event.

Stay Over:

After the event on Saturday 8th, the family are staying over at a local campsite. We will be having a small birthday bash/BBQ for our Grandson. You are welcome to attend & stay over, but you will need to make your own arrangements. Details to follow.

Team Criteria:

Each team will have a maximum of 6 participants, with a minimum of 4. The team will manage itself throughout the event, arranging your own travel arrangements to and from the event, and any accommodation arrangements. Car sharing will be a must, as the remoteness of the event & timings will not allow for public transport. Undertaking arduous Mountain activities will require you to have a certain level of fitness. We are not expecting you all to be Mountain Goats'' as we want as many people to be involved as possible for this worthy event.

What's Included:

Each team will be provided with a survival bag for each Mountain, water/energy drink & energy bars. Laminated route cards will also be supplied. Experienced instructors will be placed at the midway point & summit of each Mountain to guide the teams through. Instructors will also be on hand throughout the event to give assistance and guidance. All instructors are fully qualified in remote first-aid, and will be in radio communication throughout the event.

Training Days:

Training days will be arranged for February & March in the South Downs area. These will be FREE, and you will have to make your own travel arrangements & packed lunch. The training days will give you the opportunity to try out your kit, discus kit/footwear and get some valuable tips from the instructors. We will also have the chance to discuss incident procedure. A full kit list will be issued during the registration phase. Details to follow.

Initial Registration:

During this phase, all team members details will have to be submitted. This is so we can send out PAR'Q's. This is a 'Physical Activity Readiness Questionnaire' and MUST be filled out by every participent. In line with the new data protection act which came into force in May 2018 all participants details will be kept in the strictest confidence during the event, being securely disposed of at the finish.

Summary:

We do hope you can join us as a family in supporting these two fantastic National Health Service establishments, and the great work they do in supporting families through difficult times. 2020 is year we would all like to forget in many ways, as it has effected everyone around the world. This event is definitely something to look forward to in your own personal challenge & achievements.
